Ask The Reckoner

How do I say no if someone I don’t like asks me to prom? Am I allowed to say no? - plsdontaskme
Never feel obliged to go to prom with someone—prom is about so much more than having a date, and you have every right to refuse a promposal. Just keep in mind that you should always remain respectful and courteous when declining the offer. Be straightforward and honest. There is no point in delaying the inevitable. Tell them the truth in why you cannot go with them. Although it might seem rude or blunt, it sure beats the guilty feeling of getting caught in the lie.

Why does Valentine’s Day even exist? - </3
The history of Valentine’s day is actually really interesting. Valentine’s day is associated with the Roman holiday Lupercalia, celebrated in the middle of February to honour the start of spring. During this event, boys would draw girls’ names from a box, and the two would be a couple for the rest of the day (maybe get married if they didn’t despise each other). That sounds cute, but there were also festive traditions like men stripping naked and whipping young women to increase their fertility. Sorry Romans, I think we’ll stick to chocolate and roses.

I realise that getting involved in extracurriculars is really important for a well-rounded student, but lately I’ve been feeling like it’s just too much! The thing is, I’m not even doing that much; well, in comparison to lots of other people I know. I don’t honestly believe that I can keep my grades up (or bring them, for that matter) while continuing the few things I am doing, because they do require lots of work and commitment. I really don’t want to quit any of the things I’m doing, and I really have to do well in school, but honestly, I think I’d also like some sleep. How can I balance everything????
- Overworked
Take it from someone who is just as, if not more, overworked- this vicious cycle never ends until you leave school, and not even then if you’re one of those all round university students. The only way to get some sleep is to make your own sleep time. Fix a certain duration of time when you will sleep no matter what. For example, I usually sleep through a Saturday to make up for the time I stay up all week. Another trick is to sleep through spare. But if things are really bad, I suggest you drop an extracurricular. As important as ECAs may be, your health and grades should always come first. There’s always next year to take that up again when you have less workload.
Potential conversation topics to talk about when a convo is about to die
- not a mgci student ;)
Dying conversations are most often caused by a disconnect in interest, either on one or both parties’ sides. With that being said, there are too many potentially “interesting” topics to discuss. Perhaps you’d like to get to know your partner better. “What was the date of your goldfish’s death?” “How many crickets can you fit into your mouth at once?” “Do you remember when you received your last HPV shot?” Maybe that’s not what you’re looking for, and you’d prefer more subdued subjects, like the weather. “It’s sunny out.” Long pause. “Yeah.” However, if you’re truly desperate, try: “Did you know snails have fourteen thousand sharp teeth?” That one will for sure help you out.
