At 2:30 PM, amidst an exhilarating atmosphere on a cool April evening, Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute faced off against Leaside High School in a badminton tournament. The competition was filled with close calls and admirable sportsmanship, highlighting the exceptional badminton skills of both schools, with ultimately MGCI coming out as winners..

Taking place in the Marc Garneau gymnasium, the days buzzed with the energy of back-and-forth battles across different categories. In singles, players such as Jerry Hong, Andrew Chen, Angelina Wang, and Oriana Zhou played fierce one-on-one competitions. Doubles teams, including Jacky Lin and Saiansh Bhatia, Michael Yang and Yameen Aziz, Emily Ma and Stephanie Chen, Fatima Alizada and Aisha Atif, Luck Xing and Grace Zhu, along with Enzo Shi and Atisa Wang, also displayed remarkable teamwork.

After the event, Emily Ma, who delivered a stellar performance alongside her doubles partner Stephanie, reflected on the day’s events: “Sure it was really fun and we played well, I also enjoyed watching some of the other matches that were being played.”

The matches, comprising five games per player, were a mix of tension-filled moments and strategic maneuvers. Players from both MGCI and Leaside exhibited resilience and technical expertise, making for a truly unforgettable experience.

Andy Zhou, another member of the badminton team who could not make it that day commented, “Atisa was a great partner and good luck to her for the rest of the games she played.”

Additional notable performances came from Micheal Yang and Yameen Aziz who helped boost team spirit and contributed to the overall results by shouting positive words at the players.

As the badminton season progresses, the MGCI team is eager to build on their recent success and continue displaying their skills in upcoming matches. The invaluable experience gained from competing against a formidable opponent like Leaside High School is set to benefit the MGCI badminton team in future contests.

Stephanie Chan commented on the team’s effort, stating, “We played against Leaside High School and won as a school overall! Although not all the teams won, we all played our best and it was a great experience.”
