Prideful Showing at GSA Movie Night

On 31 May 2018, the Gender and -Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club held an afterschool movie night. Situated in Room 225, viewers were given veggie and cheese pizza as refreshments during the showing of the 2014 LGBTQ+ historical film Pride.

Pride tells the story of the 1984 Lesbians and Gay Support the Miners campaign during the miners’ strike in the United Kingdom. It highlights the common struggles the two groups faced against the Margaret Thatcher government, as well as the gradual acceptance of the LGBTQ community by miners. The movie was chosen to kickstart June, Canada’s national Pride month, as well as raise MGCI’s awareness of GSA.

GSA was founded by Bridget Huh and Jessica Guo in late April to combat the stigma around the LGBTQ+ community in Garneau. The club is devoted to acting as a safe space for MGCI students to share any issues they may be facing about their sexuality and educating students about LGBTQ+ affairs. Their weekly meetings involve discussions focussed around a target LGBTQ+ topic, and the club hopes to make Garneau more understanding and accepting of the community. Mr. Pearce and Ms. Munro serve as teacher supervisors to the club.

The event was well received by students, with Grade 10 attendee Harrison Chiu commenting, “Pride was a very powerful and moving film,; my friends and I really enjoyed it.” The showing also coincided with the unveiling of the new GSA library display the day before. The exhibit showcases a selection of Rainbow Reads, which are LGBTQ+ themed books. The rest of the library’s Rainbow Reads collection is on display on a separate rack inside the library. The library display also features as well as posters and art pieces promoting LGBTQ+ issues.

GSA hopes to host similar events like this in the future with President Bridget saying, “We’re not planning any other events for this year since there’s only a month left, but hopefully we’ll be able to do a lot more next year like many more sales, and perhaps we could work with SAC to organize a Pride month pep rally.“

GSA meetings are held every Tuesday lunch in Room 225.
