For those who decided to run for an elected position, Sspeeches for elected positions were held in the cafeteria on 7 May 2018\. It was mandatory for all Grade 9 to Grade 11 students to attend. For the presidential candidates, there was one extra step in the process: taking part in a presidential debate. The debate took place after school on 2 May 2018, and the presidential candidates, Areez Khaki, Nelson Lee, and Helen Chen, answered questions from the audience.
The voting period lasted from 8:15 am on 7 May 2018 to 3:15 pm on 10 May 2018, and students could vote online through a website as well as on a paper ballot. Results for the elected positions were released on 10 May 2018.
The winning candidate, now the 2018-2019 SAC President, Areez Khaki, commented, “I can’t wait to work with each and every one of the SAC members to make our school a better place and to redefine the Garneau experience.”
For the appointed positions, the process involved an open application followed by an interview conducted by the elected SAC members. These candidates were then voted on by the newly-elected SAC members, with the candidate with the most votes being selected.
