| February | Discovery of Gravitational Waves (LIGO) + Picture! | http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next/physics/big-ideas-of-2016-gravitational-waves-rocked-the-world/ | Einstein’s theory of general relativity, which famously predicted the existence of gravitational waves, is confirmed by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). The observatory uses L-shaped tubes called interferometers to detect the waves. Gravitational waves are infinitesimal disruptions of spacetime that emanate from the motion of matter. The LIGO team is able to detect gravitational waves caused by the merger of two massive black holes that occurred 1.3 billion light years away. Scientists believe that this discovery could have applications in the proof of String Theory. |
